Your Name

The paper is going to be about the movie “Your Name”, directed by Makoto Shinkai. These research papers must be 3-5 pages in length and must demonstrate a comprehension of fundamental film theory. You may choose any film to write about; even a film not shown in class. Research papers may be written from various analytical perspectives, such as critical theory or visual interpretation. This will be discussed thoroughly before the paper is due. Topics you may choose to write about include: Auteur Theory – interpreting a director’s authorship of the film, or arguing that this particular director can or cannot claim sole authorship of the film, etc. Stylistic choices – analyzing a director’s distinct visual and aural language through mise-en-scene, formalism, realism, production design, editing, diegetic sound, non-diegetic sound, dialogue, etc. Genre conventions – what are the film’s tropes and conventions? Does it ever subvert these narrative and aesthetic codes? Students may approach these papers from various other perspectives.
