Compositional Qualities of Work
Looking at the image Barbershop by Jacob Lawrence. It is such a great piece to learn how to analyze or break down the visual components of the work. To formally analyze a work of art will help you appreciate the work at a deeper level. Getting some background information can help you gain more insight into the work but it is not necessary to do the analysis of the formal composition. The first thing to do is take in the overall image and then, literally describe in detail to yourself what you see… What’s the subject matter? what colors do you see, how do you respond to the shapes or what elements are repeated, etc…The description will inform your process of analyzing the work. There are four IMPORTANT types of lines that are present within this work. List what they are and give specific examples from the work for each type to support your answers. The artist depicted spatial depth using various techniques. List three ways spatial depth is depicted and give a specific example from the artwork for each technique to support your answers. The texture is implied in the work. Explain how the texture is implied by giving 2 specific examples from the work to clarify your answers. What color scheme do you see within the work? Please give specific examples from the artwork to support your answers. The principle of contrast is present within the work. Please give specific examples from the artwork to show 2 different ways contrast is present and explain the impact. What type of unity is present? How it is created? What kind of balance does the work have and how is it created? How is the main focal point created? Are there other areas of emphasis? There are many patterns within the work due to the different elements that are repeated to create a specific pattern within the work? What kind of rhythm is created from this?
Critical Response to Architecture
A critical response to architecture The goal of this assignment is to explore your reactions to a building or space through a critical description and analysis of its formal qualities and composition. Select a building or space that provokes in you a strong reaction, either positive or negative. Your first paragraph might be devoted to this purely subjective and emotional response (e.g. As I entered the lobby, I was felt an uncontrollable urge to break into song…). Then concentrate the rest of your essay investigating the how and why of this reaction. Pay attention to such factors as massing (vertical, horizontal, symmetrical, asymmetrical), spatial arrangement and rhythms, materials, color, textures, ornament. How do these specific characteristics coalesce to create an experience or visual effect? Do you think that your response was intended by the architect? If not, is it the result of the forms and spaces or the product of your own experience and associations? Do not hesitate to use drawings and diagrams to support your exposition.
Film as an Art Form
Write an essay of approximately 2500 words on a topic related to the study of film as an art form. The essay will be evaluated on thematic content but also structure, organization, grammar, spelling, research and proper (MLA) citations. Here are some topics for you to consider: The work of a particular film director The analysis of a particular National Cinema (in a specific time period i.e. French film in the 1930s) Analysis of a particular film genre (again limiting yourself to a particular time period would be useful i.e. American Horror films of the 1930s) Documentary films Animation Experimental films The Hollywood Studio System of Production Analysis of a single film (one not seen in class)
Feedback Loops in Art Making
Take a single, blank sheet of Letter sized (or A4) paper, and transform it so that it operates according to the properties of new media art and systems aesthetics we learned. Perhaps, you could use the paper as an example of an input/output feedback system. What you do to the paper is not restricted to writing or drawing: you may fax it, print on it, clone it, burn it, fold it, crumple it, measure it, stick things on it, cut it, atomically deconstruct it, post it, place it, exhibit it, anything that you like. For the submission, you need to document your project in any media (photo, sound, video) and submit the documentation with a description of your process (350 words max). Make sure you include footnotes of reference material, citations (if any) and bibliography. Upload on Canvas a document in PDF, or DOCX format. Instructor’s note: The goal of the second assignment is to think about the process of feedback loops in art- making. Create an interesting feedback loop which emulates, rather than simulates, life around us. If you still feel confused about the concept, read Jack Burnhams Systems Aesthetics (1974), go over the lecture notes on Manovichs New media properties, and reference some 20th century scientific influences (e.g. Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Norbert Wiener) Also, examples of early systems art will be helpful. Address the following questions: How is your artwork an open system so that the artwork can change and evolve differently over time? What type of interaction happens between the spectator, the artist(i.e. you), the artwork and its surroundings? How do you emphasize the process of art-making over the art object? How does this artwork engage a critical and meaningful dialogue with our surroundings? What type of documentation ( photo, sound, video, blog, etc.) is appropriate to support your artwork? What is the presentation scenario for your artwork? For example, conceptual, public space, virtual space, gallery, festival venues, etc. Rubric
Modern Adaptations Mythology
*I would like to use the flood myth. For this assignment, your goal is to write a modern adaptation based on one of the myths that we have read in this class. Choose your favorite mode of storytelling (fiction, poetry, video, graphic novella, screenplay, painting, etc.) and tell us the myth as you imagine it might happen today. Consider the mythological elements that can be found in the original myth: how might you translate the human dilemma and situation into contemporary times? What lessons are at the heart of this myth? How does it teach us about how we are supposed to act (or not act)? There are no specific word counts or page limits for this assignment because you have your choice of style and format for how you want to approach it. However, I will be looking for two main qualities as I grade: the project should demonstrate a thoughtful reinvention of the original elements of the myth. In other words, I should be able to recognize which myth you are adapting, as well as essential details like the myth’s theme, conflict, and the main character’s personality traits. I will also award full credit to projects that show attention to detail and are well-developed, edited, and polished. (If you choose to adapt your myth in a format that cannot be uploaded here, please email it to me). Examples of Modern Adaptations Below are a couple of modern adaptations to get you thinking about how you might translate your myth to contemporary times. Boland and Duffy both write poems about myths–but they take different approaches: Boland talks about how the Persephone myth has connected to her own life. Duffy re-writes the myth of Midas (about the man who wishes for everything he touches to turn to gold) but she tells it from the wifes perspective. The other adaptation examples include a Doritos commercial, a song, a painting, and a graphic novel. As you consider these, think about what myth you might adapt, and how that myth might look if re-told today. Finally, consider what format you might use for your adaptation. If you like drawing or painting, you can do a visual representation, or you could choose to re-write it, or create a brief video adaptation. Its totally up to you! The goal is to have fun and re-tell the myth in a way that makes it relatable to contemporary times. https://emilyspoetryblog.com/2013/05/27/mrs-midas-by-carol-ann-duffy/
