Communication Strategies
Nonverbal Communication Analysis
Analyze either a video clip or real-life scenario at a café, grocery store or other public space. Write an essay of 1200 words minimum applying the topics discussed in class. APA citations. You do not need to reference your class-notes, though if you are using specific details/quotations from the text, you should cite those. -Cite your video clip, so I can view it if needs be. -No other sources are required, but outside research always helps. Add these to your list of references. Term Paper Option 1: Video clip -Use a movie or online video clip -Suggested length: under 3 mins. Remember: you want detail not tonnes of summary and generalizations. -Can be part of a larger movie -May have audio, but don't lean on audio for analysis -No "Crazy Stupid Love" or "Friends episodes'. Silent films are a good option. -1200 words minimum -double-spaced -Carefully proofread with correct grammar (ie: full sentences and no run-ons) 1. Introduction Provide context and summary (What is going on in the clip, overall? What is the context of this situation?) 2. Analysis (body) section -Use no more than three key concepts (ie. Kinesics, Eye Movement) from class. One, in-depth is fine. -Organize however best suits the clip (ie. Chronological or thematic) -Make sure analysis is detailed and specific. 3. Conclusion -Make any final overall conclusions about the clip. Remember: unique, thoughtful insights gain marks -Give at least one example where we might see this behaviour in real life Some questions to consider: 1. What makes this clip/movie funny? How do we know its satire? (ie. JP Spears videos, Jack Black movies, slapstick sit-coms) 2. Is this good acting? 3. Would you know what to think/feel without the soundtrack/why? 4. Based on the non-verbals, what makes this person a great actor? 5. Based on the non-verbals, how is this movie/clip ethnocentric? How does it require you to be from a specific culture to understand it? Term Paper Option 2: Real life, public place analysis -Choose a public space and analyze one or more interactions within a set time and context -APA style citations (unless your department uses otherwise…eg MLA) -1200 words minimum -double-spaced -Carefully proofread with correct grammar (ie: full sentences and no run-ons) 1. Introduction Provide context and summary (What is the context of this situation?) -Include all the pertinent details as they relate to the analysis -Offer a well-supported hypothesis (ie. I think this couple is meeting for the first time; I think the student is nervous meeting his teacher) 2. Analysis section -Organize as works best for your data (ie. Chronological or thematic). Most students lay out the basic details first and then provide the analysis. -Be sure to relate to key content/theories from the course 3. Conclusion -Provide any final overall observations. “My hypothesis was correct/incorrect” -“The implications of this analysis are…” Some avenues to consider (more to be discussed in class): 1. What are the new non-verbal conventions on social distancing seen in this place? 2. Gauging the level of suspicion/caution around social distancing in a public space 3. How people have conversations in person while also texting 4. Is this a first, second, or third date? 5. Signs of confidence versus insecurity 6. Is this a job interview, and did it go well? 7. What are non-verbals do drivers use to navigate busy intersections? 8. Can you spot different non-verbals related to status and how customers are treated in a coffees shop? 9. Pick a politician. Can you spot sincerity or lying? Don't pick the easy scenario.
