History

The core assignment of this course is a documented research paper (1600-2000 words in length = approx. 6-8 pages double-spaced, 12-point font). The paper should support a thesis statement with information gained from research or investigation. The paper will not be just a report presenting information but will be a paper that carefully examines and presents your own historical interpretation of the topic you have chosen and your interpretation of the information you have gathered. The paper may include consideration of problems and solutions, define key terms, or refute arguments against your thesis statement.  Use a minimum of four sources for your paper, and at least one must be a primary source.

Explain Absolutism and Constitutional Monarchies(Mixed) and their impact of the governments of the nations of Europe, especially Britain and France. What were the defining functions and features of each government? What were some of the conditions and factors that motivated the creation of the Age of Exploration that occurred in the mid 1400s-1600s? Compare and contrast indentured servitude and slavery. What were the differences and where did the majority of indentured servants and slaves originate from respectively? How did colonialism and the slave trade affect the peoples and governments of Africa in the 1400s-1700s?

The Seven Years’ War lecture is an overview of this important eighteenth-century war, also known as the “French and Indian War,” which had significant consequences for American history. Please use these lectures and the textbook to answer the following questions in at least a paragraph each: Explain the American Enlightenment and Great Awakening and how you think each impacted American history.What were the most significant outcomes of the Seven Years’ War and how did it ultimately lead to the American Revolution? 

Based on a reading of William McNeill’s Plagues and Peoples Respond to the following in essay form.  Responses should total not less than 1250 words.  A footnote has been included as a guide.  Failure to follow a standardized citation form is slothful, especially given word-processing assistance. What are “macroparasites?”  What are “microparasites?”  How does “modulated macroparasitism” operate?  In what environments are microparasites most significant?  What are some of the ways that these two types of parasites interact? What does McNeill mean in the following quote: Looked at from the point of view of other organisms, humankind therefore resembles an acute epidemic disease, whose occasional lapses into less virulent forms of behavior have never yet sufficed to permit any really stable, chronic relationship to establish itself. Does McNeill believe that the advances of modern medicine have banished microparasitism from the human condition? Respond to one of the following: -How did the expansion of the Mongol Empire in the thirteenth century alter the disease environment of Eurasia?  -How does McNeill’s narrative encourage us to reinterpret the “Fall of the Roman Empire” in the fifth century and Justinian’s effort to reconstitute it in the sixth century?

Format of the Country Report 1. Introduction Provide the country’s profile in terms of its demographic, economic, political, and cultural evolution over the last few decades. In particular, focus on factors that have affected and continue to affect the country’s economic growth and overall development potential. 2. National Enabling Environment Discuss in detail the national profile on the conditions of Local Economic Development (LED). The report should provide information on what policy steps were taken to make the country perform well economically. That means you provide:             data on the shift in economic policy, institutional changes, governance, removal of constraints to business              review the LED planning and partnership between the actors (local governments, the business community and non-governmental organizations) to stimulate investments that will promote sustained high growth in a local community        assess the local community’s comparative advantage in existing market opportunities for businesses, and reduction of constraints to business expansion and creation 3. Practicing LED Describe what happened locally, focusing on government, private sector, local institutions— including micro-finance institutions (MFIs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community based organizations (CBOs)—and how well these institutions work together. 4. Analysis of Initiatives Review the impact using indicators: increased investment and employment opportunities; improved infrastructure development; strengthened local tax base; and improved social services particularly health and education; household poverty reduction 5. Conclusion Summarize and comment on feasibility for sustained growth. 6. References

In the history of mankind many very small groups of peoples have been able to expand and establish large empires (Please think of the Romans, the Mongols, and the British, etc). Why do you think this is possible? What are the circumstances that allow for this to happen?
