The Bill of Rights are the First Ten Amendments included in our Constitution. Explain why the Founding Fathers felt that we needed these rights to to ensure we had protection of our Civil Liberties. In the readings, we see how the Courts have helped to interpret how the Bill of Rights have been expanded by the Fourteenth Amendment to apply to the states as well. Discuss how the Supreme Court did this by explaining Selective Incorporation. Once you have done this, explain some of the limitations placed on these rights by listing at least three instances where this has happened. This can include the First Amendment liberties such as limitations on religion, speech, or assembly, or any of the other Bill of Rights. There are plenty of examples of how no right is absolute. Find three of these examples and explain them as well as cite cases where the Court made these determinations. Finally, discuss the Second Amendment and what rights the Courts have determined we have to Bear Arms. Do you believe this right is absolute? Explain why or why not? What changes do you see if any in the 2nd Amendment? I will create a rubric that will guide you writing a thorough paper.

Describe three particular leaders or movements and show how they help define this time period. How did the Progressives shape the society we live in today? 2. World War I. Why did the U.S. get involved in World War I? Why was it a controversial war in America? Explain Wilson’s goals after the war. How successful was he? 3. World War I and American Life. Explain the impact of World War I in America. Consider various social, economic and political changes in the country during and right after the war. Do you think these changes were actually caused by the war? 4. The 1920s. What happened in America during the 1920s? Why do historians see the 20s as the beginning of “modern times”? Address social, cultural, economic and political factors. 5. Depression. Explain some of the possible causes of the Great Depression. Who suffered the most? How did people react to economic stress? Describe some social changes in this era. 6. New Deal. Explain how Franklin Roosevelt proposed to help the economy. Why was he able to make so many changes? What lasting impact did New Deal policies have on America? 7. New Dealers and Progressives. How were the New Dealers similar to Progressive leaders of a generation earlier? How were they different? To the extent they differed, was it because they had different ideals or because they were in different times? 8. Women. Explain some of the changes in women’s lives in the early 1900s. Describe the role of women in shaping the Progressive Era, World War I, the 1920s, and 1930s. Do you think the status of women changed because of women’s activism or because of other changes in society? How did ideas about race shape American history from the period of 1877 to 1919? How did white supremacy inform southern politics, immigration, and foreign policy? How did non-white Americans advocate for equality? The essay should be at least three pages in length. It must use at least six primary sources from the American Yawp reader. Place those sources into the wider context of American history in the period under review.

Compare the Seated Woman of Çatalhöyük to the Woman from Willendorf (Paleolithic Period).  How do these two works illustrate the differences between societies in the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods?  What do scholars believe the Seated Woman indicates about the possible status of women at Çatalhöyük? Chicago is the citation and bibliographic style used by historians. Q: Do we simply just answer the questions in order …like question 1), 2), 3), etc. A:  Yes answer the questions, but it should be incorporated into a cogent, formal written response…either one robust paragraph, or small 3 paragraph essay with the following outline: 1) Introduction Paragraph: Describe the Historical Context of the primary source, including an explanation of the Author, Audience and Argument. -Author: That is, who is the Author and when did she / he live…why is she / he writing this primary source? -Audience: who is the Author writing to and why…why would people of that time be interested in this topic?-Argument: what is the main idea they are trying to express and defend…do they support their argument with solid facts and claims. Who in the society at that time would object to the claim / argument? 2) Content Paragraph:  Simply explain what the article was about. Answer the guiding questions within this section.  If it is a narrative, explaining an historical event, then explain that story. If it is a persuasive expository text, then what claim / argument are they trying to prove? 3) Conclusion – Analysis & Historical Significance of the Primary Source: Explain why this primary source is important to the West / European History? How did it have a “ripple effect”?  Analyze the primary source through the lens of the Global Studies…how and why is this important economically, politically, geographically, and culturally during that time and later in Western / European history? What were the similarities in political structures, religion, and social structure in Mesopotamia and Egypt? What were the main differences?
